LCD enclosures - aiding digital advertising in the 21st Century.

Since the birth of digital signage in Asia, forward thinking businesses have seen digital signage as the way to capture attention and increase thier brand awareness. This has become more so in the USA, where Out Of Home Dynamic advertising (also known as ooh advertising) is one of the fastest growing markets.

As soon as you leave your front door you will see OOH ads, these have a multitude of uses, from giving passenger information, improving brand awareness or even giving up to the minute news reports on things that are important.

OOH is also known as outdoor digital signage and dynamic advertising, the digital signage solutions have overtaken the static billboard advertisements, you will have noticed if you have ever been to New York, the replacement of static bill boards with "electronic billboards", these consist of digital outdoor signage that covers the entire sides of buildings.

However for entertainment value, it is good that we do not live in San Paulo, Brazil, because in 2007, they banned all billboards in the City!

Why has outdoor digital signage become so porpular?

Well is down to the increasing reduction in cost of the LCD displays, almost every home in Europe has an LCD display even if it's a computer monitor! The old CRT monitors and TV's are now obsolete.

All you need to do is put the LCD TV and the media player into an outdoor LCD enclosure and you have the perfect outdoor signage solution.

1 Business Sector that's doing well in a recession - Digital Signage

Dynamic Digital Advertising is leading the forefront in advertising and the digital signage has indicated that sales will increase by 129% in 2009 alone, even in an economic slow down!

The increase in narrowcast is due to the falling costs of the technology used in digital signage, such as the LCD and plasma televisions, media players are also coming down in price, this is now making digital signage more affordable for everyday businesses, rather than the large corporations who previously used electronic billboards.

With the increase in use of digital signage, we are seeing a growth of LCD displays being installed everywhere, these are used for:

  • Public Information Points for passenger information on trains, ferry's and airports.

  • Brand building.

For a successful digital signage campaign, only 4 elements are required.

  1. The advertising campaign. This is the content you are going to use to increase your sales and your profit. This can easy be achieved by searching on Google for "Free digital signage software", once downloaded, all you need to do is drag and drop your content (this can be images, audio, video and text) that is already on your computer and it's done!

  2. Display device. This is basically either an LCD display or a Plasma display with the advancement of technology, there is very little that separates them now, you can also use a touch screen display that then creates an interactive experience for the customer.

  3. Media player. This is the mini computer that holds the content, it will have an Internet connection, either hard wired or wireless for remote updates and is a fifth the size of a computer.

  4. Protection for the digital signage hardware. When the sign is part of an digital outdoor signage solution, the need for protection is increased due to the increase in vandalism to the display and media player. Also the hardware will require protection from the weather, one of the best options and most cost effective is an LCD enclosure or plasma enclosure, depending upon the display used. These enclosures are manufactured to European IP rating standards as well as the American NEMA standard.

What is digital dynamic advertising and why LCD enclosures are needed.

Well it is a form of electronic display device that is situated in public areas, streaming information for either advertising, entertainment or to inform the masses, also known as adfortainment.

Digital signage is becoming more and more popular due to the fantastic return on investment. Compared to traditional static signs digital advertising is easy to use and faster to get results and in this day and age when we are judged by our results, we need a solution that delivers constantly.

Due to large plasma and LCD display prices dropping in the market place, this has opened the digital signage market up, no longer are digital signs only in airports displaying adverts or on train stations displaying train times etc, we now see these displays, at gas pumps while we fill our cars up, up selling the gas stores products.

But no matter how affordable an LCD or plasma TV is, if it is vandalised it is useless, this is why there is a need for protective LCD enclosures espeically when used for unmanned outdoor digital advertising campaigns. These enclosures are specially manufactured to protect the TV and media player from unauthorised access and physical abuse, to NEMA and European IP standards.

Independent studies show that a small scale restaurant or retail digital sign solution will cost in the region of $4000-$6000 whose return on investment is realised almost immediately.

Who can use this new technology to get their message across, well almost anyone down to the mom and pop stores in our towns. Anyone who has a product to sell will benefit from digital signage.

The main part of digital advertising is the actual advertisement; if this fails the advertising campaign is dead in the water. So the user has to create the marketing content, there are companies that provide this service for a monthly fee and it works out more affordable than employing someone to do it.

Once the media content is created, it can be uploaded via an internet connection, compare this to the cost of duplicating the content and distributing it to each location, for example if you had 3 locations in New York, 1 location in Florida and your were based in California, and on average it cost $500 per location to renew the media this would save you $2,000! The new media content can even be scheduled to upload at a set time and the system reboots, displaying the new information.

There are many companies that are using digital signage for dual reasons, firstly to inform their customers and secondly to alert customers if there is a problem such as a fire at a particular terminal, or in colleges to inform students of class changes etc as well as any incidents on the campus such as gun crime.

The market is due to be worth $10 billion by 2011 in the USA alone, with Europe being worth $2 billion. I think this is one industry that is recession proof, as every business needs to advertise their products and this is the most affordable way to get the marketing message across.
